Limbs, bodies and transitory anatomy are reoccurring themes in Dean Dempsey's work. Fragmentations is a series reducing anatomy into segmented body parts, often exchanging the bodies of those close to the artist's father for his remaining limbs. Left/over is a pun on throwing salt over the left shoulder for good luck, and on what limbs are anatomically left over. This piece depicts the father's mother, whereas Hand/gun is loosely based on the police officer who first found the artist's father on the railroad tracks, and who fainted and received medical attention himself for traumatic stress.
