This body of work uses an alienated, othered body as a way of discussing race and gender. In The Director, the viewer witnesses the subject take center stage as the director instructs from off stage, exposing the artifice of the artist’s picture-making and the paraphernalia of process and production. In Family Portrait, the artist brought back the same character for a family portrait. The family is slightly aloof in the moment preceding their official portrait from an off-frame camera.
